GENERAL DESIGN PRINCIPLES
Balance and Arrangement
Balancing is the even distribution of design elements in the space provided. By design elements I mean the objects, shapes, colours, images, or text in the design. The Design workspace should be considered and it would determine how these elements would be evenly distributed on the workspace. For an interior decorator, the workspace might be the area of the living room, the elements being the Shapes and sizes of the furniture and other objects to be placed in the room. The objects should be properly arranged such that there would be enough space on all sides, Left-Right, Top-Bottom.
Harmony
Harmony is the art of using related elements in design such as similar colours, same font, proportionate sizes and the likes. A living room painted in red, with the carpet in blue and the sofas in purple, and the … The colours would just be too disgusting. And if you would remember interiors you have appreciated, you would notice that there is a blend of the various colours used. A Blue wall with a rug in the dark blue range, with sofa in the blue- green range shows harmony. As a graphic artist, let there be a blend in the colours you use for your texts, and backgrounds. Also the font type and sizes you use should be in harmony to bring out the best of your designs.
